Setting up Google Tag manager
What is Google Tag Manager, and how do I set it up? In this article, we will show you what Google Tag Manager can do for you and how you can connect it to your ProAGenda booking pages
What is Google Tag Manager?
Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free Google service (like Gmail or Google Drive) that lets you manage tracking scripts on your website without involving a developer every time you want to make a change.
By connecting your GTM container to your ProAgenda booking pages, you can independently track events like bookings, purchases, and page views — and send that data to any analytics or marketing tool you use.
You own and manage your GTM container. ProAgenda simply injects it into your booking pages — we never access or configure what’s inside your GTM account.
You will need:
- A Google account (Gmail, Google Workspace, etc.)
- A Google Tag Manager account and container (free at tagmanager.google.com)
- A Premium Academy subscription on ProAgenda
💡 If you already use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) or Google Ads, you may already have a GTM account. Check tagmanager.google.com first.
Step 1: Create a GTM Account and Container
Skip this step if you already have a GTM Container ID (e.g. GTM-XXXXXXX).
- Go to tagmanager.google.com and sign in with your Google account.
- Click Create Account.
- Fill in your account details:
- Account Name: your academy or company name
- Country: your country
- Under Container Setup:
- Container Name: your booking website URL (e.g. youracademy.platform.com)
- Target Platform: Web
- Click Create and accept the terms.
- GTM will show you a snippet — you can close this for now. ProAgenda handles the snippet injection automatically.
- Your Container ID is shown at the top of the screen (e.g. GTM-K2F9X7). Copy it.
💡 Your Container ID always starts with GTM- followed by letters and numbers.
Step 2: Add Your GTM Container ID to Your Academy Settings
- Log in to ProAgenda.
- Go to Academy Settings.
- Find the Google Tag Manager ID field.
- Paste your Container ID (e.g. GTM-K2F9X7) into the field.
- Click Save.
Your GTM container will now be injected into all your public booking pages automatically on every page load.
To update your GTM ID: simply paste a new Container ID and click Save.
To disconnect GTM: clear the field and click Save.
Step 3: Set Up Triggers in Your GTM Account
Now that your container is connected, you need to tell GTM what to do when events fire from your booking pages. You do this by creating Triggers in your GTM account.

Example: Track Bookings in Google Analytics 4
Here’s how to set up a GA4 event when a booking is confirmed:
1. Create a Trigger
- In GTM, go to Triggers → New
- Click the trigger type and choose Custom Event
- Set Event Name to: booking_confirmed
- Set it to fire on All Custom Events
- Name it "Booking Confirmed" and click Save
2. Create a GA4 Event Tag
- Go to Tags → New
- Choose Google Analytics: GA4 Event
- Enter your Measurement ID (from your GA4 property, e.g. G-XXXXXXXXXX)
- Set Event Name to: booking_confirmed
- Under Event Parameters, add the fields you want to capture:
- Parameter Name: booking_id | Value: 0
- Parameter Name: lesson_type | Value: 0
- Set the Triggering to the "Booking Confirmed" trigger you just created
- Name it "GA4 - Booking Confirmed" and click Save
3. Publish Your Changes
- Click Submit in the top right of GTM
- Add a version name (e.g. "Added booking tracking") and click Publish
💡 GTM changes only go live after you publish. Always test in GTM Preview Mode before publishing.
Step 4: Verify Your Setup with GTM Preview Mode
Before publishing, use GTM’s built-in Preview Mode to confirm events are firing correctly.
- In GTM, click Preview (top right)
- Enter your booking page URL and click Connect
- A GTM Tag Assistant panel will open in your browser
- Perform a test booking on your page
- In Tag Assistant, confirm booking_confirmed appears in the events list
- Verify your GA4 tag fired for that event
- Once happy, go back to GTM and click Submit to publish
Do I need technical knowledge to set this up?
Step 1 and 2 (getting your Container ID and saving it in ProAgenda) require no technical knowledge. Step 3 (setting up triggers and tags in GTM) is moderately technical. If you’re not comfortable with GTM, we recommend asking your marketing agency or GA4 consultant to help.
Will GTM slow down my booking pages? No. GTM loads asynchronously in the background and has no impact on page load speed or your clients’ booking experience.
What if something goes wrong with GTM?Your booking pages will continue to work normally regardless of any GTM issues. GTM is completely separate from the booking flow — a GTM error will only affect tracking, never the booking or purchase experience for your clients.
Can I use tools other than Google Analytics?Yes. GTM supports hundreds of tools including Meta Pixel (Facebook Ads), Google Ads conversion tracking, Hotjar, HubSpot, and many more. You can add as many as you like inside your GTM container.
How do I disconnect GTM?Go to Academy Settings → Google Tag Manager ID, clear the field, and click Save. GTM will stop loading on your booking pages immediately.
